The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the largest living species of lizard, is native to Indonesia's Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and nearby islands. These giant reptiles can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) long and weigh around 150 kilograms (330 pounds). As apex predators, they dominate their habitats, hunting prey such as deer, wild boars, and occasionally scavenging on carrion.

Known for their sharp, serrated teeth and powerful limbs, Komodo dragons can deliver a venomous bite that impairs their prey through toxins and blood loss. Interestingly, young Komodo dragons live in trees to avoid predation by cannibalistic adults. They reach maturity after 8–9 years and can live up to 30 years.

Endangered due to habitat loss and climate change, these fascinating creatures are protected under Indonesian law, with efforts centered in Komodo National Park to preserve their population.
