Opabinia: The Five-Eyed Wonder of the Cambrian Seas

Opabinia is one of the most fascinating and bizarre creatures from the Cambrian period, roughly 505 million years ago. Discovered in the Burgess Shale fossil deposits of British Columbia, this extinct marine arthropod-like animal was only about 7 cm (2.8 inches) long but packed a lot of weirdness into its tiny body.

What made Opabinia so extraordinary? For starters, it had five stalked eyes on its head, providing an almost 360-degree view of its surroundings. But that's not all—it had a long, flexible proboscis (like an elephant's trunk) ending in a claw, which it used to scoop up soft, small prey from the ocean floor and feed it into its backward-facing mouth. Its segmented body featured pairs of flaps along the sides, which likely helped it swim or crawl slowly across the seabed, while its fan-shaped tail added a touch of flair.

When Opabinia was first presented to scientists in the 1970s, its odd features caused the audience to burst into laughter. Today, it is considered a stem-group arthropod, meaning it shares a distant evolutionary relationship with modern arthropods like insects, crabs, and spiders.
